How to Calculate CPM

CPM, cost per mille, is what 1,000 impressions cost. Divide the campaign cost by the impressions and multiply by 1,000.

Example: $5,000 for 400,000 impressions is a CPM of $12.50. Turned around, the same formula gives the budget for a reach or the reach for a budget.

Three ways round, plus clicks

  • CPM = cost ÷ impressions × 1,000
  • Cost = CPM × impressions ÷ 1,000
  • Impressions = cost ÷ CPM × 1,000
  • CTR = clicks ÷ impressions × 100
  • CPC = cost ÷ clicks

From Ad Report to Salesforce Campaign

Four steps, so CPM, cost per lead and ROI all start from the same spend.

  1. 1

    Pick One Campaign and Period

CPM only compares when cost and impressions cover the same ads and the same dates.

  2. 2

    Export the Ad Report

Spend, impressions and clicks from LinkedIn Campaign Manager, Google Ads or Meta, for that date range.

  4. 4

    Record the Spend in Salesforce

Enter it in the campaign’s Actual Cost field. Cost per lead and ROI reports then use the same number.

Pardot and Marketing Cloud Next

CPM Buys Reach. Pipeline Pays the Bills.

A low CPM buys cheap attention. Cheap customers are another matter: in B2B the number that decides a budget sits further down, at what a lead, an opportunity and a won deal cost.

Record the spend on the Salesforce campaign that Account Engagement (Pardot) or Marketing Cloud Next assigns the leads to, and your reports show what each lead and deal cost.

  • Cost per lead and per customer from the same campaign
  • ROI from won opportunities
  • One naming convention, so every ad lands on its campaign

CPM Calculator FAQ

Short answers to what people ask about CPM.

What is a good CPM?

It depends on the network, the audience and the format, so a single number misleads. Compare your CPM with your own past campaigns on the same network and audience.

For B2B the better question is what a lead or an opportunity costs. The cost per lead calculator takes it from there.

Is CPM the same as TKP?

Yes. TKP (Tausend-Kontakt-Preis) is the German name for CPM: the price of 1,000 impressions or contacts.

How do I convert CPC to CPM?

Multiply the CPC by the CTR and by 1,000. A $2 CPC at a 0.5% CTR is a CPM of $2 × 0.005 × 1,000 = $10.

Viewable or all impressions?

Use what the platform bills. If you buy viewable impressions (vCPM), enter viewable impressions; otherwise the impressions the report shows. Mixing the two makes campaigns look cheaper or dearer than they are.

Are my numbers stored?

No. The calculator runs in your browser. Nothing you enter is sent to us or to analytics. The share link keeps the numbers after the #, a part of the address browsers never send to a server.
